HOWTO: How do I set the Retention Times on Archive folders to less than 30 days?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange 7.X

Question:

  • How do I set the Retention Times on Archive folders to less than 30 days?
  • How do I set the Retention Time for Archive In and Archive Out?

Procedure:

Note: In MailMarshal/SEG supported versions, you can set the retention times for these folders to as little as 1 day in the Management Console or Configurator.

From the ECM Array Manager, use the Registry Editor (regedit) to find the RuleDirectories registry key, which contains the retention time value for both Archive In and Archive Out:

{Registry Location}\Default\RuleDirectories

  • For MailMarshal Exchange 7.X the key is:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Marshal\MMExchange\
  • For details of the registry locations for each MailMarshal version, see the following Trustwave Knowledgebase articles:
    • Q14003 (MailMarshal Exchange)

The Archive In value will be similar to the following:

UniqueId=str:AA55C8DA-7BE2-4EA4-AD99-BAB37FC598|ReadOnly=bool:1|Path=str:AA55C8DA-7BE2-|EA4-AD99-BAB37FC598DC|Icon=int:4|Type=int:1|DeleteDays=int:31|SecurityDescriptor=str:|Description=str:This is an archive folder for all inbound messages. By default, messages are kept for 6 months.

To set the retention time, change DeleteDays=int:(VALUE) to the number of days you wish to retain these archives.

Warning: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Trustwave cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Make sure that you back up your Registry prior to making any changes.

After making the registry change, commit changes in the MailMarshal Configurator and restart the MailMarshal services.  The new retention time will be reflected in the MailMarshal Configurator GUI.

Notes:

  • If you attempt to adjust the retention time from the GUI (in the affected versions), this will force the retention time back to the minimum 31 days.
  • Messages will be retained for the number of days set plus one day.  This is because the program has to compensate for international enterprises that span multiple time zones.
