Question:

• Cannot install SQL Express 2016 on Windows 2012 R2
• Error window points to a log file that is not available

Information:

Installation of SQL Express 2016 on Windows 2012 R2 requires Microsoft update KB2919355 (Cumulative update, May 2014).

If you are installing on a new system and you have not yet completed installation of Windows Updates, you may encounter this issue.

To confirm the issue you can check the content of the file
%programfiles%\Microsoft sql server\130\setup bootstrap\detail.txt

If this prerequisite issue occurs, you will see the following entry in the file:

KB2919355 Check Failed. If you have installed KB2919355, please make sure you have restarted your machine. For more information, you can visit https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2919355/

Note:

KB2919355 is a required prerequisite for all later Windows Updates.
