INFO: Considerations with WebMarshal in mixed IPv4/IPv6 environments

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • WebMarshal 7.X

Question:

  • What issues could occur with WebMarshal in a mixed IPv4/IPv6 environment?
  • What connectivity is required between WebMarshal servers in a mixed IPv4/IPv6 environment?

Information:

WebMarshal has been tested successfully in mixed IPv4/IPv6 environments.

When installing WebMarshal 7.X as an array of servers where some servers may have IPv4 only or IPv6 only enabled, it is important to ensure that all servers can communicate.

  • The processing servers communicate with the Array Manager, and with a Domain Controller if AD authentication is used.
  • The Array Manager communicates with the processing servers and Domain Controller.
  • In a domain environment, the Array Manager must have access to the Domain Controller in order to authenticate connections between the servers (using the local system account), even if AD authentication is not used.

It is possible to restrict some of the servers to only IPv6 or IPv4, as long as there is a valid connection between each pair. For example, the Array Manager and Domain Controller could allow IPv6 only while the processing servers allow both IPv4 and IPv6.

Notes:

  • For further information about WebMarshal and Active Directory, see the related articles linked below.
  • Use a current version of Windows Server as the Domain Controller. (Windows 2003 servers use an older version of the IPv6 stacks and may not work correctly in these scenarios).
