HOWTO: Minimizing relay lookups for common domains

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave SPE (MailMarshal SPE) 3.8.2 and above

Question:

  • How can I improve performance of relay lookups for common domains such as Office 365 (mail.protection.outlook.com)?

Background:

  • Processing of delivery information for domains with high volume, where the DNS records have a low TTL, can have a significant effect on performance as many lookups must be performed back to the authoritative servers.
  • Lookups are often redundant due to the relay permission being covered in an existing IP group or other relay permission setting.

Resolution:

In SPE 3.8.2 and above you can remove redundant lookups by excluding certain domains from replication to the SEG relay tables.

  • Set the Registry value shown, on each Array Manager server where you want to apply the exclusion.
    • Note: The key Replicator might not be present. Add this key if necessary.
  • The exclusion is applied at the next replication, with no need to restart any services. However, if no other changes requiring configuration reload are pending and you want the exclusion to apply immediately, after setting this value you must "force reload" from the SPE Admin Console.

Path: HKey_Local_Machine\Software\WOW6432Node\Marshal\MailMarshalSPE\Replicator
Value name: IgnoredRelayEntries
Type: REG_MULTI_SZ
Value data: Enter one domain per line as in the below example

Warning:
Use due care when editing the Registry.
