PRB: Default power options reduce performance on Windows Servers

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • All Trustwave products running under Windows operating systems
  • Microsoft SQL servers supporting Trustwave products
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 and above

Symptoms:

  • Poor performance

Causes:

By default Windows servers are configured with the Balanced power option. This option dynamically adjusts CPU speed (and potentially other settings) to conserve power. Performance is scaled to meet load.

However, the response can lag behind the load requirement.

Where systems encounter uneven load (such as occasional large database queries or email unpacking activity), overall performance can be significantly reduced by this feature.

See Microsoft Knowledge Base article 2207548.

Resolution:

Set the power option for servers to the High Performance plan.

Notes:

Some hardware vendors set perfomance options in BIOS. These settings can override the software options.

  • Review documentation for your hardware to determine whether BIOS settings may affect your system.
