INFO: Advanced Registry settings for throttling

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange 7

Question:

  • What advanced settings are available to control MailMarshal Exchange performance throttling?

Information:

To ensure that Exchange Server is not being overloaded with messages, MailMarshal Exchange periodicaly checks the number of email files in the Replay directory. If the number is too high, MailMarshal Exchange logs an alert and stops placing processed email in the Replay directory.

By default the Engine checks every 7 minutes and stops moving processed mail if more than 30,000 files are present.

You can use Registry settings to adjust the threshold number, and the frequency of the checks.

Notes:

  • The default values are reasonable and most sites should not make any change.
  • In MailMarshal ECM 7.1 and above, due to updated architecture most messages do not pass through the Replay directory. In these versions the Replay diretory is much less likely to contain a large number of messages, and the settings described here are not likely to come into play.

To configure these settings:

  1. Edit the Registry on the MailMarshal Exchange Array Manager.
  2. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Marshal\MMExchange\Default\Engine
Enter one or more of the following DWORD values (add the DWORD entries if they are not present):
    • MaxReplayMessages: Enter a decimal value.
      • If the number of email messages in the Replay directory exceeds this value, MailMarshal Exchange will not place any additional messages in Replay.
      • Default value: 30,000. Maximum recommended: 50,000.
    • CheckExchangeLoadTime: Enter a number of minutes as a decimal value.
      • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange checks the count when the Engine service starts, and then on the schedule you set.
      • Default value: Every 7 minutes.
  3. To apply the Registry changes:
    • Commit configuration changes
    • Restart the Engine service on each email processing server (in Configurator > Server and Array Configuration > Server Properties).

Warning: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Trustwave cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Make sure that you back up your Registry prior to making any changes.
