FAQ: Why is it not possible to set interface speed fixed to 1 GB/s or duplex mode to FDx?

    Why is it not possible to set interface speed fixed to 1 GB/s or duplex mode to FDx?

  • Answer
    Because it does not make sense to provide this option. According to the standard (IEEE 802.3ab) 1000BaseT is based on autonegotiation. By using autonegotiation the port speed is detected and set automatically to "1000" when connected to a Gibabit-switch port.Although some vendors use variable port settings with 1000BaseT, this is a proprietary implementation and not according to the standard. (see also IEEE standard interpretation http://standards.ieee.org/reading/ieee/interp/IEEE802.3af-2003interp-6.pdf)
