INFO: Mirroring McAfee for Marshal downloads locally on IIS

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • McAfee for Marshal 6.X
  • Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)
  • Hosting a mirror site for Engine updates locally with HTTP

Question:

  • What special settings are required to mirror McAfee for Marshal updates on a local HTTP server?

Information:

The McAfee for Marshal engine updates use an .INI file to list the available version number and other information. This is a plain text file.

By default, IIS does not serve INI files, since they represent a theoretical security risk.

To allow IIS to serve the file, you must add this file type to the MIME map in IIS.

To add the type:

  1. On the local server where the file will be posted, open IIS Manager.
  2. Open the property sheet for the virtual website or virtual directory.
  3. On the HTTP Headers tab, click File Types.
  4. Click New Type.
  5. Enter the following information:
    • Associated Extension: INI
    • Content Type: Text/Plain
  6. Click OK to exit from the dialogs and property sheet.
  7. You may need to restart IIS.

Notes:

  • This is an advanced option and will only be used by a few customers. This setting is NOT required if you are retrieving updates from the default Marshal and McAfee sites.
  • Microsoft states that if you apply MIME map changes on master property sheets, any custom changes for sites or directories will be lost and must be re-entered.
