HOWTO: How do I view performance counters when running on a 64 bit system?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG) 6.5 through 7.5.X
  • WebMarshal 6.1.5 through 6.12.X
  • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange 5.3 and above
  • 64 bit Windows versions

Information:

  • The named versions of WebMarshal, SEG, and ECM install on 64 bit systems as a 32 bit application.
  • The 32 bit performance counters are not available by default in the Windows Performance viewer.

Procedure:

To view the Marshal 32 bit performance counters when using a 64 bit Microsoft Windows environment:

  1. On the computer where you want to view performance counters, click Start > Run.
  2. In the Open field type: mmc /32 perfmon.msc
  3. Click OK.

If you want to use Data Collector Sets (previously known as Counter Logs) in 32 bit mode, note that both of the following services must be running:

  • Performance Counter DLL Host Service (perfhost.exe)
  • Performance Logs and Alerts (PLA.DLL)

The DLL Host service is required for non-interactive access to 32 bit counters but it is not started by default when you start a Data Collector Set.

Note:

  • SEG 8.0 and above, and WebMarshal 7.0 and above, are native 64 bit applications. Performance Counters for these versions are available in the 64 bit Performance Monitor from the Start menu.
