FAQ: Why am I unable to view MailMarshal messages or message logs in the console?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal (SEG)
  • MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange 7.X

Symptoms:

  • Unable to view MailMarshal messages or message logs in the console
  • Error: Error reading message from server. Only partial message text is available.
  • Email processing server was moved to a new machine.
  • The message files (MMLs) are actually present in the correct folder

Information:

After migrating archived emails from one server to another, you might be unable to view them correctly in the MailMarshal Console. When you try to access the Message and Log tabs on an archived email you receive the error: Error reading message from server. Only partial message text is available.

MailMarshal is unable to access the .mml files and logs due to differing NTFS file permissions on the new server and is unable to show them in the console.

Resolution:

To allow MailMarshal to have full read access to the archived emails, set the permissions for the migrated archive folders. To do this follow the steps below:

  1. In the Console double click an email that is generating the error message.
  2. Note the full path to the message files, found in the top pane of the email.
  3. On the server where the messages are stored, grant permission over the folder to the account used by the MailMarshal services.
    • Note that in an array, messages are stored on each email processing server and not the Array Manager.
  4. Repeat the steps for all the folders in the console that include migrated content.
