HOWTO: How Do I Use EXTRA.DAT files with McAfee for Marshal?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • McAfee for Marshal version 5.1.0.0 and above
  • MailMarshal SMTP
  • MailMarshal Exchange
  • WebMarshal

Question:

  • How Do I Use EXTRA.DAT files with McAfee for Marshal?

Procedure:

The McAfee for Marshal virus scanning product can use McAfee EXTRA.DAT files.

To use an extra.dat with McAfee for Marshal:

  1. Download the extra.dat. You can obtain specific extra.dat files from https://www.webimmune.net/extra/getextra.aspx
  2. Save the extra.dat to %INSTALL PATH%\DATFiles\avvdat-xxxx-files  where:
    • %INSTALL PATH% is the McAfee for Marshal installation path, typically C:\Program Files\Marshal\McAfee for Marshal
    • xxxx is the highest numbered of the similar folders present.
    For example: C:\Program Files\Marshal\McAfee for Marshal\DATFiles\avv-4578-files
  3. Restart the MailMarshal and/or WebMarshal engine services to initialise the new extra.dat file.

This extra.dat file will continue to be used until a new set of Dat files is downloaded, or for 14 days (Extra.dat files expire after a maximum of 14 days).

Notes:

  • In MailMarshal SMTP installations with multiple email processing nodes, you must save the extra.dat file and restart the engine on each node.
  • General information about extra.dat is available from the McAfee on-line help site.
