INFO: When and how should I back up my MailMarshal Configuration?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG)
  • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange

Question:

  • When and how should I back up my MailMarshal configuration?
  • Which MailMarshal items should I back up?

Information:

Trustwave recommends you back up your MailMarshal configuration before and after:

  • Adding new rules, TextCensor scripts, virus scanners, etc.
  • Modifying server properties, for example, by adding domains or blocked hosts.

The backup procedures may differ depending on the product version.

Current product versions allow automatic configuration backup. Trustwave strongly recommends using this facility.

  1. Open the MailMarshal Configurator or MailMarshal (SEG) 10 Management Console. Navigate to Array Properties | Backup (the caption varies by version). Click Backup or Back up Now. If prompted, enter a descriptive file name for the XML configuration backup file, and click Save
  2. In this location you can also specify a schedule and retention schedule for automatic backups.
  3. To make a complete backup of the MailMarshal configuration, you will need to make copies of additional items. Refer to the section 'Backing Up and Restoring the Configuration' in the User Guide. The User Guide is included in your installation as a PDF and also within the Help. You can also download it from the support section of this website.

Notes:

  • MailMarshal configuration backup does not include a list of members of imported groups (such as LDAP or Active Directory groups). When you restore a backup, you must reload imported groups before starting processing.
  • Configuration backup does not save the database retention setting. If you use a custom retention period and you restore a backup to a new server, you will need to set the retention period.
  • If you are moving MailMarshal to a new server, and you plan to continue logging to the same SQL database, you must copy or update the database sequence file.  The database sequence file is located in the MailMarshal installation directory.
