INFO: What are the advantages of using an integrated virus scanner versus using a command line scanner?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal (SEG)
  • MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange

Question:

What are the advantages of using an integrated virus scanner over a command line scanner?

Information:

Some of the advantages that an integrated anti-virus scanner has over a command line scanner:

  • Using integrated scanners offers a significant increase in message throughput. Integrated scanners do not require initialization for each use, and are generally at least 10 times faster returning a result.
  • Integrated scanners can provide the virus name for reporting purposes. Command line scanners are unable to provide this information as they simply return a "yes" or "no" for virus scans.
  • An integrated scanner is more stable since MailMarshal is designed to work closely with the integrated scanner.
  • Some integrated scanners provide a custom updater tool that helps to ensure up-to-date protection.
