HOWTO: How do I enable the URLCensor?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG) 5.5 and above

Question:

  • How do I enable the URLCensor?
  • What rule blocks incoming email with certain URLs in the message body?

Procedure:

To enable the URLCensor, create a rule similar to the following, if the rule does not already exist:

Standard Rule: Block Spam - URLCensor
When a message arrives
Where message is incoming
Where message is categorized as 'URLCensor Blacklisted'
Move the message to 'Spam - URLCensor'

Warning:  Trustwave strongly recommends you do not combine the URLCensor with other category conditions in a single rule.  For example, the following rule requires both the SpamCensor and URLCensor to trigger at the same time, and thus would cause MailMarshal to block significantly less spam than it would with either the SpamCensor or URLCensor used on its own.

Where message is categorized as 'Spam' and 'URLCensor Blacklisted'

Notes:

  • MailMarshal (SEG) 10.X allows use of "or" in the message category rule condition. However for clarity in reading policy this option should be used with caution.
  • For more information on troubleshooting and advanced configuration options, see the following Trustwave Knowledgebase article:
    • Q10236: "How do I block Spam based on URLs in the message body?"

You can use URLCensor to complement your existing spam rules. URLCensor targets Web links typically included in spam messages and provides excellent false triggering, hit-rate, and speed.
