HOWTO: How do I control outbound bandwidth?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG) 6.2 and below

Question:

How do I control outbound bandwidth?

Procedure:

In versions 6.2 and below of MailMarshal SMTP, you can limit the amount of bandwidth MailMarshal uses to send messages. This may be useful if you have limited bandwidth and want to restrict MailMarshal so that is only consumes a certain amount of that bandwidth.

Note: The preferred method to limit bandwidth is to use settings of a router or other external device. The MailMarshal functionality is basic.

Controlling the amount of bandwidth that MailMarshal uses is done by editing the registry. Follow these steps:

  1. Access the following key:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Marshal\MailMarshal\Default\Sender
  2. Add a DWORD value, called BytesPerSecond.
  3. Enter a Decimal value to set the value to the number of bytes per second for your bandwidth limit. For example, to set a a limit of 20KB per second enter 20000.

Notes:

Take due care when editing the Registry.

For more information on registry address variations in versions of MailMarshal, see the following article:
