FAQ: Can MailMarshal (SEG) or ECM recognize file types if the file extension has been changed?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal (SEG)
  • MailMarshal ECM/MailMarshal Exchange

Question:

Can SEG or ECM recognize file types if the file extension has been changed?

Reply:

Yes. File type rules identify files by their characteristic signatures. Changing file extensions does not affect the identification. For instance a ZIP file (.zip) with its file extension changed to .zoop will still be recognized and unpacked correctly.

Notes:

Specific information on the file types recognized can be found in the following LevelBlue Knowledgebase article:

SEG/MailMarshal SMTP 6.0 and above, ECM/MailMarshal Exchange 5.2 and above:
  • Q10858: What file types are recognized by MailMarshal SEG and ECM?
