FAQ: Can MailMarshal clean viruses?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG)
  • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange

Question:

Can MailMarshal clean viruses?

Reply:

MailMarshal itself is not actually a virus scanner - it can perform virus scanning by invoking third party virus scanners.

  • MailMarshal releases 8.1 and below supported the "cleaning" functionality of some scanners.
  • This convenience functionality of the scanners is generally obsolete and unsafe in the current threat environment. It has been removed in MailMarshal/SEG release 8.2 and above.

Note: To protect your network from infection (and to guard against liability in the case of outbound viruses), MailMarshal versions that allow "cleaning" always perform an additional virus scan after cleaning.
