Large Files Downloaded and Scanned Twice with IE

  • Description
When using Internet Explorer 6, and the Finjan status page is enabled through the Management Console, a large file is sometimes downloaded twice before it can be saved.

  • Symptoms

When the user requests to download a large file, Vital Security Web Appliance starts downloading the file, and the status page is displayed.
After the file was downloaded and scanned by Vital Security the Internet Explorer prompts the user to download the file, like in the screenshot below.

In some scenarios when a user chooses to download the file, it will be downloaded and scanned again before Interent Explorer prompts the user to save it locally.

  • Cause
  • This double downloading can happen for one of two reasons:
    1. A user doesn't choose to download the file within 2 minutes after the file was downloaded and scanned by the Vital Security appliance. After two minutes, the file is then deleted from the temporary cache, and if requested after this time, Vital Security will begin downloading it again.
    2. Sometimes, when a user chooses to download a file after it was scanned by Vital Security, IE will request the original file on the web server and not the internal file in the temporary cache.
In this case, the file will be downloaded and scanned again by Vital Security.

  • Solution

There are 2 optional solutions for this issue:

    1. A user should choose to download the requested file within 2 minutes after it was downloaded and scanned by Vital Security.
    2. You can bypass this issue by altering a setting in Internet Explorer:
Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Custom Level -> Downloads -> Automatic prompting for file downloads -> Enable.
