Configuring Proxy Timeout

This article applies to:

  • WebMarshal 6.1.5 and above

Question:

  • How do I change the timeout for WebMarshal outbound connections?
  • WebMarshal Proxy times out because the website is taking a long time to respond
  • The timeout is 90 seconds by default (30 seconds in earlier 6.X versions)
  • How do I change the timeout for outgoing SSL or FTP connections?

Procedure:

In WebMarshal 6.1.5 and above, you can change the length of time WebMarshal will wait before timing out a standard HTTP connection to a remote site.

In WebMarshal 6.10.2 and above, you can change the length of time WebMarshal will wait before timing out a HTTPS (SSL) or FTP connection to a remote site.

HTTP timeout

You may need to adjust this value if a remote webpage takes a very long time to return any data (for instance if the server is running a large report). The current default setting (version 6.9) is 300 seconds.

You can adjust the timeout setting as follows. If you have more than one processing server, you must make the changes on each server.

  • In version 6.5.5 and above, use the WebMarshal Server Tool > Advanced tab, and enter a value for Server Timeout.
  • In version 6.1.5 and above, by adding an entry in the WebMarshal Proxy Configuration file (WMProxy.config.xml)
    <WebMarshal>
        <Proxy>
         <Config>
    <ProxySettings serverTimeout="{timeout in seconds}" [other attributes...] />      </Config>
       </Proxy>
    </WebMarshal>

HTTPS timeout

In WebMarshal version 6.10.2 and above, you can change the connection timeout for SSL (HTTPS) connections. The default value is 240 seconds.

  • Add an entry in the WebMarshal Proxy configuration file (WMProxy.config.xml) on each processing server
    <WebMarshal>
        <Proxy>
           <Config>
              <SSL connectionTimeout="{timeout in seconds}" [other attributes...] />
           </Config>
        </Proxy>
    </WebMarshal>

FTP connection timeout

In WebMarshal version 6.10.2 and above, you can change the connection timeout for FTP connections. The default value is 240 seconds.

  • Add an entry in the WebMarshal Proxy configuration file (WMProxy.config.xml) on each processing server:
    <WebMarshal>
    <Proxy>
    <Config>
              <FTP TunnelConnectionTimeout="{timeout in seconds}" [other attributes...] />
    </Config>
    </Proxy>
    </WebMarshal>

Notes:

  • To ensure that your browser does not time out, you may also need to change the WebMarshal trickle settings so that some data reaches the browser. To change these settings, in the WebMarshal Console see Server and Array Properties > Download Options.
  • For general information about editing XML settings files, see article Q12705.
  • The file WMProxy.config.xml is located on the processing server. If you have more than one processing server, you must make the changes on each server.
  • To apply the change, restart the WebMarshal Proxy service.
  • When entering the timeout value, do not include the braces {}, but do include the quote marks.
  • Back up configuration before making changes.
  • The file WMProxy.config.xml normally contains additional settings. The ProxySettings, SSL, and FTP nodes can have multiple attributes. Each of these nodes should only occur once.
  • To adjust this setting, only add (or remove) the specific attributes as described above.
