Question:

Running authenticat.exe in debug mode using the Windows Event Viewer.

Reply

When running into problems with 8e6 Authenticator (authenticat.exe), it is possible to run the application in a "debugging" mode as a troubleshooting tool. Problems can include the following:

    * Not being able to initially authenticate.
    * The application fails to start properly.
    * The application kills itself after a short period of time.

While in debug mode, authenticat.exe will generate a log entry for various steps of operation. To run authenticat.exe in debug mode in which it outputs log entries to the Windows Event Viewer, use the following command:

start authenticat.exe RA[VIP] LE[1] LD[4]

  • VIP should be replaced with the virtual IP address used for authentication.
  • LE[1] specifies that the debug log will be written to the Windows Event Viewer.
  • The LD parameter indicates the level of logging detail in which 4 is the highest and 0 will only report errors.
  • Depending on your version of Windows, the Event Viewer can be accessed by right-clicking the My Computer icon, then selecting Manage. Event Viewer will be under System Tools and authenticat.exe logs will be under Application.
