Configuring Message Throughput for the MailMarshal Exchange Agent

This article applies to:

  • MailMarshal Exchange 5.3 and above
  • Microsoft Exchange 2007

Question:

  • What is the default message throughput setting for processing between Exchange 2007 and MailMarshal Exchange?
  • How can I modify the message throughput or throttling of Exchange 2007 with MailMarshal Exchange?
  • MailMarshal Exchange processing messages slowly.

Information:

MailMarshal Exchange uses the Exchange 2007 Replay directory to transfer messages for processing. By default Exchange 2007 accepts approximately 100 message files a minute from the Replay directory. This low default value could result in processing delays.

As part of MailMarshal Exchange product installation, MailMarshal Exchange changes the default value to 1800 files a minute. The higher value more accurately reflects real-world processing abilities of the software.

Depending on permission settings, the installer may not be able to set this value.

Workaround:

You can check and set the value using the Exchange Management Console. For more information and instructions, see the following item from Microsoft TechNet: Managing Message Throttling. The relevant setting is PickupDirectoryMaxMessagesPerMinute.

Notes:

  • When you uninstall MailMarshal Exchange, the value is restored to 100 (if possible).
  • Marshal strongly recommends you do not adjust other agent settings within Exchange interfaces or files.
  • In MailMarshal ECM 7.1 most messages do not pass through the Replay directory and thus the Exchange throttling setting has a much smaller effect on throughput.
