Locked out of MailMarshal Configurator

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG) 8.X and below
    • Note that MailMarshal (SEG) 10.X replaces the Console and Configurator with a web-based interface
  • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange

Symptoms

  • When opening the Configurator you receive an error message similar to the following:

Trustwave SEG (MailMarshal) settings are locked by user %USERNAME% on machine %COMPUTERNAME%

Causes

  • Only one instance of the Configurator can be open and connected to the Array Manager service. The Configurator locks the MailMarshal registry hive and will not allow another instance of it to connect.

Resolution:

  • If you are sure that the lock is an error, you can remove it.
  • Assuming the Configurator is opened by another user on the local server (or on a machine that is accessible), you can use PSKill from Microsoft to stop the MMC process.

Follow the steps below to unlock the Configurator:

  1. Download PSTools, available on the PSKill page at Windows Sysinternals.
  2. On the machine where the Configurator is running, extract the file called pskill.exe and place it in the system path (i.e. %WINDIR%System32)
  3. When the Configurator is locked, navigate to Start > Run and then type pskill mmc in the run dialog box.
  4. The Configurator will now be unlocked.

Note:

In rare cases (usually if one or more programs previously closed unexpectedly), you might find that a lock exists where no Configurator is actually running.
In this case you can proceed as follows:
  1. Stop the Array Manager service (use the MailMarshal Server Tool or Windows Services applet).
  2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the MailMarshal installation directory and remove the file Lock$File
  3. Start the Array Manager service.

This method carries additional risk so it should only be used as a last resort.
