What is the difference between an event and a task in the Security Reporting Center Scheduler?

This article applies to:

  • Security Reporting Center 2.1

Question:

What is the difference between an event and a task in the Security Reporting Center Scheduler?

Information:

When a profile is configured to run in the Scheduler, a scheduled event is created. The scheduled event tells the Scheduler what profile to run, how frequently, and how to handle the reports.

When the scheduled event is created, the scheduler agent breaks the event into tasks. Depending on the number of reports needed, a single event can be broken down into more than twenty tasks. The scheduler agent then handles these individual tasks, one at a time. A task can be the analysis of single day's worth of log data, migration from the FastTrends database to the content database, or creation of each individual report.

Notes:

The analysis, export, and render tasks are segments of an event. Event configuration determines the type of report to generate, the period of time covered in the report, and the profile the reports are based on. The profile defines the location of the firewall log file(s) to be analyzed as well as how the log file information will be accessed.
