How do I use Asian characters in a message stamp?

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG)
  • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange

Question:

How do I use Asian characters in a message stamp?

Symptoms:

  • MailMarshal Configurator cannot be used to enter Asian characters in a message stamp.
  • Asian characters appear corrupt or incorrect when applied to a message stamp.

Causes:

MailMarshal is not fully character set aware.

Procedure:

Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG) 10.0.6 and above

You can compose message stamps for the HTML body of a message that use wide characters in the Message Stamp window of the Management Console. See the procedure described in Trustwave Knowledgebase article Q21995.

  • Stamps composed and saved by this procedure will display correctly in the HTML body, regardless of message encoding.

Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG) 8.X

To configure MailMarshal to utilize Asian characters in a message stamp:

  1. Compose the desired message stamp in a character set aware application, such as Notepad.
  2. Copy the message stamp text from Notepad into the Message Stamp window in the MailMarshal Configurator. You can expect to see standard extended ASCII characters in the Message Stamp window.
  3. Save the message stamp and apply it to a MailMarshal rule. The message stamp should now display the correct Asian characters.
    • The characters will only display if the body of the message is in the same encoding as the message stamp. The message stamp may render incorrectly if it is in standard ASCII 7-bit encoding or any other character set.
