How do I configure Firewall Suite to run as a service on Windows 2000?

This article applies to:

  • Firewall Suite 4.X
  • Microsoft Windows 2000

Question:

How do I configure WebTrends to run as a service on Windows 2000?

Procedure:

Running Firewall Suite as a Windows service allows it to start automatically when a Microsoft Windows NT, 2000, or XP machine is started, and allows it to run when there is no user logged into the machine.

These instructions are valid as of Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, and are unlikely to change to any large extent, but the Microsoft Windows documentation may need to be consulted if there are major changes to updated releases of Windows 2000.

Edit the local machine security policy

  1. Click Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.

  2. Expand the tree for Local Policies.

  3. Click the User Rights Assignment folder.

  4. All rights should then be listed. The three that should be selected are listed below:

    • Log on locally
    • Log on as a service
    • Act as part of the operating system [this option is not given to any account by default]

Note: The user must be a member of the Administrators group for the services to properly interact with the operating system.

  5. Right click each of these keys and choose the Security option.

  6. Add the accounts.

Note: When using Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition there are two options when adding rights to the user, Local Policy Setting and Effective Policy Setting. Both options must be checked for the service to run properly. By default, the Local Policy Setting is checked when the service is added; however, in order to be able to select the Effective Policy Setting the system must be rebooted.

  7. Make note of the full account listing as show in this window. Notice that the local machine is listed or the domain is listed before the account name followed by a slash (\).

Configure services

  1. Go to the Windows Control Panel and double-click Administrative Tools.

  2. In the Administrative Tools window, double-click Services.

  3. Right click WebTrends Reporting Center in the right panel, and select Properties.

Note: The WebTrends Reporting UI should not be run under a specific user or group account.

  4. Click the Log On tab.

  5. Select This account and click Browse to select an account from the list.

  6. Enter the password for the account, confirm it, and click OK to exit the dialog.

Note: After adding the user account that WebTrends services will use to log on as an NT service, click Scheduler | Service and identify the user account there.
