Question:
- Why add an alternative email address to the SQM?
Information:
The MailMarshal SQM website allows a user to add "alternative email addresses" to their SQM view.
Each user should ensure that all the local addresses where they receive email are added to their view. The list of alternative email addresses is used for the following purposes:
- The lists of safe and blocked senders that the user has entered will be applied to messages for the main address and all the alternative addresses.
- Neglecting to add all addresses is a very common cause of user complaints that their preferences are not being applied by MailMarshal.
- Blocked email messages for the main address and all the alternative addresses will be shown in the user's list of blocked email. (The messages will most often be addressed TO the user. Depending on the setup of the folders visible in SQM, some messages could be addressed FROM the user.)
- Digests of blocked mail for the user (if configured) will include messages for the main address and all the alternative addresses. The authoritative email address used to log in to the SQM is the mailbox that will receive any digests.
Notes:
- In most cases when SQM is configured to retrieve addresses from Active Directory, all email addresses for the user will automatically be associated with the authoratative email address. There may be some instances email addresses will need to be added manually within the Add Alternative Email Address window. For instance, distribution list addresses that the user wants to manage, and addresses that are not associated with any user's AD identity, must be added manually.
- For more information about AD and distribution list addresses see Q12012.
- If SQM is not configured to retrieve addresses from Active Directory, then any additional addresses must be entered manually.
- For more information, see Help for your version of SQM.
