Can I view MailMarshal email files (MML) outside the Console?

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG)
  • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange 7.X

Question:

  • Can I view MailMarshal email files (MML) outside the Console?
  • Viewing MML files offline

Reply:

A standalone viewer for MML (MailMarshal email message) files is included with MailMarshal SMTP current versions, and MailMarshal Exchange 7.X.

The executable file MMLViewer.exe is installed in the MailMarshal installation directory.

You can copy this viewer application to other locations. The viewer performs the same functions as the message view in the Console, including extraction and saving of attachments.

  • With SEG/MailMarshal 6.9 and MailMarshal Exchange 7.X, you must also copy FileType.dll from the Config subfolder of the installation, to the same location as MMLViewer.exe.
  • With SEG/MailMarshal 7.X, you must also copy FileType.dll and  Unpacker.dll from the Config subfolder of the installation, to the same location as MMLViewer.exe.
  • You may also need to install the appropriate Visual C++ Runtime package, available from Microsoft. (If this is required, starting the MML Viewer raises an error.)
    • For MailMarshal SEG 6.9 through 7.X, and MailMarshal Exchange 7.X, the required version is the Visual C++ 2010 SP1 redistributable (32 bit version).
    • For SEG 8.0, the required version is the Visual C++ 2013 SP1 redistributable (64 bit version).
    • For SEG 8.1 and above, the required version is the Visual C++ 2015 redistributable (64 bit version).

When you first start the viewer you can choose to associate it with the file extension .MML. You can also manage this association within the viewer from the Tools menu.

Note:

If you do not have the MML viewer, you can view most parts of an email message by copying the .MML file to another location and changing the extension to .EML

The message content and attachments will then be viewable in Microsoft Outlook.

This method works for all versions of MailMarshal.

Caution: When viewing a message in Outlook, all URLs and attachments to the message are live. This can be a security risk. The MML viewer is more secure, because it prevents some potentially dangerous actions.
