HOWTO: How do I remove or disable custom filetypes?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG)
  • Trustwave ECM/MailMarshal Exchange 7.X

Question:

  • How do I remove or disable custom filetypes?
  • How do I remove the custom filetype file (filetype.cfg)?

Procedure:

If you no longer want to use the custom filetype functionality (as described in Knowledge Base article Q10199), use the steps below to disable it.

  1. Ensure that no custom file types are used in any rules.
    • To check rules, print the configuration and search for uses of custom file typename(s) you have added.
    • Remove any custom typenames from the rules, and commit configuration.

  2. To remove some or all custom file types from file type recognition:

Edit the existing filetype.cfg file in the root of the MailMarshal installation folder (NOT in the Config sub-folder. Note that this is valid for all versions of MailMarshal). Delete unwanted entries, and save the file. Then perform the following actions:
    • Restart the Array Manager service.
    • Commit Configuration Changes to push the update to all nodes. Ensure that the process is complete (the file should be updated in the \NodeConfig folder on all nodes).
    • Restart the Engine service on all nodes.

  3. To completely remove the filetype.cfg file:

    • You must remove the file manually from processing servers.
    • Delete the filetype.cfg file from the MailMarshal installation folder (if the installation is an array, do this on the Array Manager).
    • Restart the Array Manager service.
    • Commit Configuration Changes to push the update to all nodes. Ensure that the process is complete.
    • Delete the filetype.cfg file from the folder \Config and the folder \NodeConfig on the Array Manager. If you have an array with more than one processing node, on additional nodes, delete the filetype.cfg file from the MailMarshal installation folder and the folder \NodeConfig.
    • Restart the Engine service on all nodes.
